he US Food and Drug Administration
(FDA) made available for comment a
draft guidance entitled "Best Practices
in Developing Proprietary Names for
Drugs." According to the draft
guidance, the FDA intends for the
guidance to help sponsors develop
trademarks "that do not cause or
contribute to medication errors or
otherwise contribute to the
misbranding of the drug."

The FDA also issued a notice
establishing a public docket to discuss
issues involving the possible
"reservation" of trademarks for new
drugs. In its notice, the FDA raised
questions and issues to be discussed
and asked for comments by 27
October 2014. The official FDA

Register at 79 FR 43751 (28 July
2014).
The US Patent and Trademark Office
(USPTO) is proposing to reduce
certain application and renewal fees
for applications and renewals filed
electronically. Electronic applications
would be reduced by USD $50.00 per
class under the proposal and
electronic applications would be
reduced by USD $100 per class. No
change is being proposed in fees for
applications and renewals filed on
